"Pursuit of Happiness" is an exhibit of photographs by Keith Holmes that explores popular culture in these United States, through images of street fairs, parades, demonstrations, and other events held in the public arena. The work celebrates individual quirkiness and creativity, but also suggests the conflicting values and cultural pluralism that have characterized the American social landscape since the Sixties. Despite the title of the show, the project does not focus on personal desire for such things as pleasure and money. The work is really about social identity, and staking a claim to America based on values, culture and ethnicity. It's about the desire to belong, the need to represent, and the collision of aspirations as we define the dream, and chase it, on the street and the stage.

The project is both a retrospective of thirty years of documentary photography, and a work-in-progress that hasn't defined or exhausted such a rich and evolving subject.  Minnesota and the Twin Cities are heavily represented, with images from the State Fair and the Pride Parade, as well as tailgate parties and many other smaller community events. Photographs from the diverse cultural milieu of San Francisco from the 80s will also be featured, as well as images from the Denver Stock Show and Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in the 90s.  The exhibit features 50 B+W photographs, hand printed by the artist on 20 x 24 inch paper. They are silver prints, rather than digital, using a high quality, graded, fiber base paper. The company making the paper has discontinued production, so these pieces are truly unique. The work is historical in both content and process.
