Although she has always done creative work in a variety of mediums, Julie Lielbelt came to sculpture later in life. She started with classes at Northern Clay Center seven years ago, beginning with throwing pots on the wheel. Liebelt quickly learned that was not for her, and turned to learning pottery hand building.
“My first hand building class introduced me to sculpture, which has been my focus since then,” Liebelt said. “I was lucky to have Franny Hyde as a teacher.”
Liebelt gets ideas for her work from photos, using one photo for the basic pose and filling in three-dimensional details with other photos. She works in porcelain, painting with underglazes after the first (bisque) firing.
“I don’t use glazes on my pieces,” Liebelt explained. “I have experimented with using metal rods and Apoxie Sculpt for bird legs, which would be impossible with clay. The connections are painted with acrylic paints to tie it all together.”
Besides her current show at Vine Arts Center, Liebelt also has work available at Fired Up Studios in Golden Valley and Local World Gallery in Wabasha. She also takes work on commission and can be reached at juliebelt38@gmail.com.
